No, I lean more to the side that thinks he’s an asshat.
I think Bill is an ass. However, that is not libel, that is an opinion.
Libel constitutes reckless disregard for the truth and/or malicous intent.
For a public figure, the standard is so high that proving libel is almost impossible.
However, I believe bloggers SHOULD be held to standards of libel. No one should be able to knowingly ruin another person’s reputation based on false information and/or malicious intentions.
Perhaps it will fall under slander and/or intentional infliction of emotional harm, but whatever it’s called, bloggers cannot and should not be given a pass that allows them to knowingly destroy another human being no more than one can yell “fire” in a theatre.
I glad the decision handed down was only in California.
I believe in free speech. I don’t believe in someone ruining another person’s life just because they can. Sadly, there are some bloggers who have and will do that, and they need to be held accountable for that.
i pretty much agree with what you’re saying Sharon. I just like saying the word ASSHAT. So sad for someone of my advanced years…
LOL John. It’s a cool word and I’m *almost* right up there with you in age!
