Vice President Cheney chirping yesterday on his favorite lapdog’s radio show continues to spread the big lie:
Saddam and al-Qaida were more than chums, they were co-conspirators. “He [Abu Musab al-Zarqawi] took up residence there before we ever launched into Iraq, organized the al-Qaida operations inside Iraq before we even arrived on the scene and then, of course, led the charge for Iraq until we killed him last June”
What makes this prevarication so interesting is that the Pentagon recently declassified a report that says just the opposite:
….the intelligence community’s prewar consensus that the Iraqi government and al-Qaeda figures had only limited contacts, and its judgments that reports of deeper links were based on dubious or unconfirmed information.
I don’t listen to Limbaugh for medical reasons, but I’ve got fifty bucks that the Rushter didn’t seriously question the Veep’s assertion. The fact is, pretty much everyone in the Bush administration INCLUDING BUSH has discredited the pre-war collaboration between al-Quaida and Saddam. They’ll ‘allow’ that intelligence was mistaken and that they were operating on good faith that the connection existed.
Truthfully, the pre-war connection existed only in the minds of the neo-cons who feverishly spun the web that lead us into this conflagration, even before 9/11.
Bob Krumm has a piece claiming that foul language and lunacy may exist on both sides of the political spectrum, but it seems to be concentrated more on the left than on the right. Even though I don’t see the point in politically parsing lunacy, I’ll grant there’s more than enough nuttiness to go around.
I do want to separate myself from the ‘i wish the bomb had taken out Cheney in Afghanistan’ crowd, but I’ve got to say that the continued propagation of this disproved propaganda is just another flavor of obscenity in my book. Bob encourages us lefty types to call out the lunacy on the left. Let me ask that reasonable people from any point on the political spectrum ring the BS bell whenever this BIG LIE reappears.
Maybe somebody should slip Cheney the memo that we aren’t staying the course anymore. Hey Dick – we’re SURGING now!
