UNCLE FRED!!!!??, or, Rolling with the Thompson gunner..

Would someone please parse this quote from near-candidate Fred Thompson:

“Twelve million illegal immigrants later, we are now living in a nation that is beset by people who are suicidal maniacs and want to kill countless innocent men, women and children around the world.”

I get the fact that the conservative candidates in the Prez-i-dential sweepstakes need to trip all over each other getting to the front on the ‘demagogue the immigrant issue’ train, but isn’t this a bit over top of the symbolic fence?

If this is true, then shouldn’t we be spending every waking moment trying to ferret out these suicidal maniacs?

As anyone who knows me or has ever read this blog (God bless ya), I’m not a fan of the current President. The immigration bill he’s proposing certainly is far from perfect, but at least he’s realistic that we aren’t really going to sweep up the 12 million or so illegal immigrants sharing our country with us. Sure we need better border scrutiny and enforcement, but this emperor of a problem does wear clothes and they’re probably working right down the street from you, and you, and me.

Classifying many of them as maniacal murderers doesn’t seem to advance the issue anywhere beyond red-meat scape-goatery. I expect more of Thompson than this.

I don’t think that’s what he is trying to say. I think what he is trying to say is more to the effect that among the 12 million illegal immigrants there are these suicidal maniacs and because of our lack of border security they’ve easily slipped into this country and are now waiting to take action. Unfortunately, every few weeks this point is proven true. The Fort Dix incident was a pretty scary one. The illegal immigrant issue is just like a lot of issues….I’m sure the majority of them are good people just like you say, but we read about the bad ones in the media and it tends to sway our opinions to where we start thinking otherwise. Just like I’m sure most police are good people, but reading about incidences of corrupt cops in the news tends to make people think they are all corrupt. Anyway, I just say let those who want to stay and have a chance to become citizens do so and send those who don’t home. Our tax dollars could be so much better spent elsewhere than providing benefits to people who are citizens of other countries and have no interest in becoming citizens of ours.

Why is everyone okay with the fact that the republican party is using immigration as their main strategy and that they are being blatantly racist?! I am horrified to see how many people are jumping on this bandwagon, horrified that conservatives think its okay to hate another race, horrified that once again, when we don’t like a group of people, we remove them in any and every way possible. It was bad enough when every conservative took the bait of “God appointed Bush, so we must follow”. But the “We are good conservative christian people trying to protect our country, so be one of us and help remove the evil that plagues our land” is absolutely vile.

  7. John, just heard you have in the hospital. I sure hope you’re well on the road to recovery and wanted you to know I was thinking about you.

    Get well soon!
